Don’t Let The Bed Bugs Bite

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Did your parents or your grandparents use to declare ‘Sleep tight. Don’t let the bed bugs bite’ when they tucked you up in bed as a youngster? You had almost certainly never seen a bed bug and probably did not even know what they were speaking about, but they would have. This is because anybody alive previous to the Second World War would probably have been bitten quite often.

Up until the 1940′s or 1950′s, depending upon where your relatives lived, bed bugs were extremely common. Just about every street had them and because the houses were not isolated from each other and because people were in and out of each other’s homes more often, bed bugs were spread everywhere. When they tell you: ‘Don’t Let The Bed Bugs Bite’, they are repeating a real wish, even a prayer from previous days.

Bed bugs were a part of everyday, or rather every night, life for millions of people in Great Britain for four hundred years. They had been around in warmer parts in Europe and the world for thousands of years before that, but they did not proliferate in Britain until after the Great Fire of London in 1666.

It is thought that they came to the UK with the timber and tradesmen that were imported to reconstruct London. By 1670, bedbugs had become a blight on the population of the UK, like they were elsewhere in Europe. Fifty years afterward, bedbugs had established themselves in Jamaica and perhaps the United States of America as well.

Bedbugs like to live in dark cracks near to their source of food, which is blood. Not all bedbugs prefer human blood; some prefer dogs’ blood others prefer chickens’ blood et cetera. However, they will all eat human blood if their preferred host is not about.

There is one bedbug though, Cimex lectularius, that does only eat human blood and this is the little blighter that people are talking about when they say: ;Don’t let the bed bugs bite’.

So, bedbugs, if you have them, will be behind any slack-fitting skirting boards or architraves, loose wall paper or in damaged plaster or lino. Their favourite location of all in in a ripped mattress. They are attracted to their blood donor by CO2 on the breath and body heat.

When they have found a host, they send out a message to all their friends and relatives by the use of pheromones. Bed bugs are most lively an hour before dawn and it takes them only five minutes to finish their dinner.

When they bite, bedbugs insert two tubes into you, one squirts saliva containing coagulant and anaesthetic and the other sucks up blood. This is why individuals seldom feel that they are being bitten. Sometimes they do not know for up to nine days and some people never know, because they are not allergic to the saliva.

Those that are allergic, may get an itchy lump, but it may not itch either. It depends on the person. Often the lumps are in rows of three, like flea bites. They are quite similar to mosquito bites, but they do not have a red dot at the centre. Fortunately for us, bedbugs do not pass on human diseases, although many bites can temporarily damage the immune system and can lead to anaemia.

Observing Bedbugs

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

There are in fact quite a few varieties of bed bug, but the one that most people mean by ‘bedbugs’ is Cimex lectularius. Other species of bedbugs will extract human blood, but normally only if their preferred host, like poultry, is unavailable.

Bedbugs are tiny, but not too small to see. Adults are about four or five millimetres in length and one-and-a-half to three millimetres wide. They are brownish in colour, but may appear banded because they are covered in short hairs.

Having said that, they are still not easy to get a good look at, because they are very quick and only come out at night. In fact, their favourite dinner time is more of an early breakfast, because they normally dine on us an hour before dawn. If you want to see or catch some bedbugs, this is the best time too do it, because you may see them struggling to get home with full bellies to sleep it off for a few days before going out again.

So, rather than waste your time, it is probably better to study a number of pictures of bedbugs first so that you know what you are looking for.. Bedbugs are attracted by heat and CO2, so one method of trying to catch a few is putting a bar of soap in a centimetre of water and then lying on the bed. After half an hour, get the soap and whip the bed clothes back. You can dab up any slow coaches with the soap.

Then you will have plenty of time to study them under a magnifying lens. If they are not living in your mattress and you are sure that you have bed bugs, check behind any loose-fitting woodwork.

They love to get into dark crevices to sleep it off and skirting boards or architrave are ideal. So is damaged plaster, broken lino or ripped wall paper.

Hardly any crack is too narrow for them, because they are so flat themselves, as you can observe from photos. They look as if they have been crushed. However, the nymphs or babies are very tiny, a bit rounder and often whitish. It takes six moultings for a nymph to become an adult and the moulted skins look just like the insect that left it, but with nothing inside it – as if it had been kind of sucked out.

The bedbug’s skin is actually the key to killing it, as bedbugs have become tolerant to most everyday insecticides. Their skin, or exoskeleton, has a waxy layer on it to prevent dehydration. If you can scrape off that wax, the insect will dry out and die.

Some modern bedbug sprays incorporate finely powdered glass or silicone which sticks to the insect and as it wriggles into crevices, the powder scrapes the wax off. Diatomaceous earth was used for the same purpose long ago and it is making a comeback in the fight to eradicate bed bugs. It is non-toxic and environmentally friendly, so safe to deploy in your home and close to your pets.

What Are Bed Bugs?

Sunday, July 18th, 2010

If you wake up one day with prickly lumps on your body, you will probably think that you had been bitten by mosquitoes or ants the night beforehand, but there is also a possibility that bedbugs have got at you. If this happens in your own bed, then you have problems. If you are in a hotel, go and make a complaint to the boss.

You can be sure that most hotel managers will take complaints about bed bugs very gravely, because it is well known that the numbers of bedbugs are increasing rapidly and have been since 1995. It is also common knowledge that huge compensation awards have been made against hotels. Some of them were at hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Most so-called ‘bed bugs’ will only feed on people if their preferred host, often poultry, are not available, but there is one that only feeds on human blood and that species is called Cimex lectularius.

Cimex lectularius was practically extinct in the developed world by the late 1950′s because of the widespread use of DDT in residences and hotels to eradicate all insects such as ants, bed bugs, silverfish, millipedes and cockroaches.

However, there has been a massive resurgence in the number of bedbugs since 1995. In fact, between 1995 and 2001, one report on bedbugs in London reported that incidents of bedbug call-outs had doubled every year.

The recovery in bedbug numbers has been ascribed to global travel and immigration from Asia and Africa. However, it is also likely that they were never completely wiped out and that they have become resistant to modern pesticides. There is not much you can put down or spray around now that will kill bedbugs.

So, what do bedbugs look like? Well, there are lots of different types of bed bugs, but most of them are brownish, unless they have just fed and then there is a red tint to them. However, they can also be white to yellowish. Sometimes, they look banded because bedbugs are covered with short hairs which reflect light like a stripy lawn.

Bedbugs have a beak-like mouth-piece with two tubes. One tube squirts saliva into you and the other sucks blood out. The saliva contains anti-coagulant and a pain-killer, so that you do not know that you have been bitten until long after the bedbug has left.

Some people never know, because they are not allergic to the saliva, others get a lump or slight swelling almost right away, but sometimes the swelling can take a week to come out. These bites may or may not be itchy.

If you travel a lot, or if you go to parts of the world that are less involved with hygiene, you must be careful about not taking bedbugs home with you. They will not remain on your body, but they may lay eggs in your clothing or hole up in your suitcase. Therefore, either before you go home or immediately on arrival have your clothes washed at a temperature above 46c and blast your suitcase with a jet of steam or hot air.

Two Basic Signs of Best Bug Infestation

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Bed bugs are insects that cause itches & rashes, and are usually found in beds. You may already have them and you don’t even know it. Bed bugs are really tiny and difficult to detect. The best way to eliminate them is to ask a termite exterminator or pest control company to do the job.

What are the signs and symptoms you have a bed bug infestation? There are two common signs, and they are as follows:

1. Rash From Bed Bugs

Itching is the first sign of a bed bug rash. You won’t be able to see the rash at first but it will definitely feel itchy. It is itchier than a mosquito bite, and the itch can only be felt after a long time (minimum of 1 hour). Sometimes, the bed bug rash appears only a few days or weeks later.

A bed bug rash has a small, round and red bump that looks more swollen than a mosquito rash. In some cases, the rash looks a lot like a bite mark in sequence. If you think you may have bed bug rash, examine it for a few days. Prolonged itching is caused by the rash, lasting for days. A bed bug rash also doesn’t heal as fast as mosquito bites. They remain swollen for weeks at a time.

2. Odor of Bed Bugs

Next thing to look for is bed bug smell. What kind of an smell does it have?

Bed bugs release an obnoxious, musty smell, so a room where there’s a lot of bed bug infestation smells of it. Under the mattresses and headboard are common places where they can be smelled. Sofas are also sometimes infested with bed bugs. If they have cracks, check if they’ve got bed bug odor.

You should call pest control experts immediately if you happen to have a bed bug infestation. Afterwards, you should create pest control rules at home to prevent a repeat of this incident.

Reading About A Emergent Cosmopolitan Bug Treatment

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Bed bugs and other similar type of bugs are encompassed in what is known as true bugs or Hemipteran. These type of bugs have the capacity to bite which can cause an allergic reaction, and at times these bits can be painful.

One example is the cosmopolitan bedbug. It is also from the Cimex species. These bugs will hide in mattresses, behind the bedboards, under loose wallpaper, and inside couches. During the day, they will hide out. At night, they take their blood meal. Their bites are painless, but at the site of the bite, redness, itching, and wheals can arise.

The next bug is the cone-nose bug. Examples of a cone-nose bug are the assassin and wheel bug. They are called cone-nose because of their elongated head. They will only bite a person in self-defense, however, their bites are painful. These bugs have been located world-wide including in the southwestern part of the United States.

The third bug is the kissing bug. The reason it is called this is because the bites are usually targeted at the mouth area. However, if some other portion of the body is exposed it will bit that area. It feeds off blood, but its bites are not painful.

The reaction to the bite is different from person to person. Some may only get a small wheal while others may go into anaphylactic shock which is a severe, life-threatening emergency. In the latter case, an immediate trip to the hospital is imperative. More commonly, someone will have a small reaction. This will include the formation of a papule at the area of the bite. It can become fluid-filled which is called a vesicle. Itchiness of the area will occur. In more intense reactions, a fever may form. Below will be discussed on how to treat these situations.

One other note to these bugs is their ability to transmit a bacteria which can lead to a whole other disease process. This usually happens in less developed countries, therefore, it is rare in the United States.

To learn about a non toxic bed bug treatment, the internet or medical treatment book is helpful. Possibly a visit to a medical professional will help as well especially in severe cases. To treat these types of bug bites, a topical anti-itch cream will work. Pills that are anti-histamines will also work. Anyone who is severely allergic need a shot called epinephrine. An item is available called an epi-pen can be given to a patient to be used at home when a severe reaction occurs. A visit to the nearest emergency room or calling 911 is the next step in treatment.

Bed bugs are normally harmless nuisances which cause small wheals on the skin when they bite. There are different species, and they hide in the bed, mattress, bed board and couch. There main goal is to bite a human being for food. A good idea is to wash bedding, or if a mattress is quite old, a new mattress will help solve things. Some new mattresses try to fight this infestation of bed bugs. Effective treatments are available when bites occur.

Avoid Bed Bugs With Practical Domestic Remedies

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

If you have ever found them in your bed, or in your house, do not feel bad. Bed bugs have been around for thousands of years, and do not seem to be planning to leave anytime soon. As with mosquitoes, coordinated efforts have been made to wipe them out of countries, like in the United States in the 1940s. Initial results were encouraging but only a few years later they came back stronger than ever.

We are going to have a brief look into these beasties and find ways to find them and techniques to kill them. This is going to be harder than you expected, these are resourceful creatures, to say the least.

Where do they live? The term bed bug is not random. These creatures do tend to live in beds, other sleeping arrangements and in other hiding places close to human sleeping quarters. As we will see, if you have them, the chances are they are in your bed or very close.

These bugs are found in homes, motels, tables, and anywhere humans and animals spend their time. They are flat and very small, which allows them to move around ventilation and water pipes with tremendous ease.

During day time they generally rest and hide in their nests. Research shows that their nest is never far from their feeding post, that is your bed, in case you were wondering. So the trick is to look everywhere around your bed and bedroom furniture because these lazy creatures do not want to walk far for their next meal.

It is impossible to provide a comprehensive list of nest locations because they can live pretty much everywhere. They hide in tiny spaces, inside cracks or maybe just out of sight in dark areas. If you are not used to searching for bed bugs you have a challenge, even a bed frame can hold numerous hiding spots for these critters. However we can provide some general guidelines.

Try looking first along the outer edges of your mattress, top and bottom. Extend your search to your bed frame, look under the mattress, especially around any cracks or small gaps. If you have a footboard or head, check there also. The chances are the lazy bugs are near where you sleep.

The big question that remains is how to kill them once you find them. This is another challenge. Many poisons used in the past no longer work. Quite funnily, using DDT, previously an effective poison, now just supercharges like if it were a coffee espresso for bugs. The most effective measures are likely to be not related to poisons. Use practical methods to isolate your bed from them with physical barriers and cleaning techniques. Steaming your mattress and bedroom furniture is a great way of killing both the adults and the eggs. They cannot resist the extreme heat of a steam spray. Another factor that is worth noting is that bed bugs cannot jump or fly. If they cannot crawl there, or drop from a higher object, there is no way he is making it. This makes it a good idea to create physical barriers with sticky tape and petroleum jelly to keep them away.

What Are The Best Ways To Solve Rodent Problems At Home?

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Rats can be a principal annoyance in the lives of many individuals. These pests are known transmitters of fatal diseases. Moreover, they chew on everything that they can sink their teeth into, creating expensive damage to structures and personal property. There are many ways to keep rats from taking up residence in your house.

One of the most effective methods to do this is to make use of electronic pest control techniques. These ways make use of sounds of high frequency emitted by ultrasonic machines that can repel the rats. These sounds are audible only to rats and hence the devices are safe for humans and domestic pets.

Another method of getting rid of rats is by making use of organic rat repellents. This method makes use of minute tablets or pellets that emit smells of rat predators and thus scare the rats away. These can be spread evenly around the house, garage and any other place which can serve as breeding grounds for rats.

You can also make use of moth balls as their powerful smell can serve as a repellent for the rats and keep them away. These can be placed at the nooks and corners of the residence for better results.

Making Use Of mechanical traps, commonly known as wooden snap traps, is a method of rat extermination that is still very popular. These traps are inexpensive and easy to place, but they should be laid with proper bait. But, they can injure the kids and pets and therefore need to be carefully placed. The biggest drawback of laying a rat trap is that it can catch just one rat at one go. Yet, it is a better choice as it is not hazardous like the chemical products that are usually toxic and quite harmful.

A technique of capturing rats is with the utilization of a glue board. These are usually made of wood or cardboard, and sticky glue is applied on their surface. You can put bread crumbs on the board that can act as good bait for rats. When rats access the food, the glue sticks to them and they can’t get off the board. This finally results in their death by starvation.

Several Rat Kinds

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Rats are rodents that belong to the Rattus genus of the family Muridae. These are the most dominant species on earth. Plenty of rat species exist in the world. Most rodents feed on plants, but some eat animals as well. Generally speaking, there are 2 basic types of rats, specifically roof rats (black) and Norway rats (brown). Both are thought to have originated in Asia and are now widely spread throughout the planet.

Ship Rats

The black rats are sometimes called roof rats and ship rats, scientifically named Rattus Rattus. They are usually black, have a slender built, 16-21 cm long and weigh about 80-300 gram. Their nose & muzzle are pointed, and their tail is longer than the head and body. They are called roof rats because they are climbers. Their paws are built to climb & build nests in upper parts of homes, rafters, attics and crossbeams of buildings.

Norway Rat

The brown rat, which is also known as the Norway rat, house rat, gray rat, barn rat, and wharf rat, is the larger of the two mentioned here, and one of the best-known species. Rattus norvegicus is their scientific name. They are mostly grayish-brown, with a lighter colored stomach. A brown rat in full size is 18 to 26 cm long and weighs between 400 and 600 grams. They have a tail shorter than its body and their nose and muzzle are blunt. They prefer moist conditions and nest in deep burrows.

These rats breed when they are three to four months of age. They breed 1 to 13 times each year and produce up to 22 in a litter. Brown rats and black rats eat about the same things. Their diet usually consists of cereals, meats, seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, fruits & invertebrates. They eat about one-third of their weight in food everyday.

They carry fatal diseases, damage structures & contaminate food. Some of the diseases potentially deadly to man that spread through rats are plague, salmonella food poisoning, toxoplasmosis & Weil’s disease.
