Sheets or bed sheets are used to cover the mattress. It is the sheet that one usually lies on.
In some countries two sheets are used instead of just one, depending on how cold it is. In that situation the sheet covering the mattress is called the bottom sheet and the other sheet is called the top sheet. Sometimes people sleep between the bed sheets.
Bed sheets used to be made strictly with white color sheets but over the ages that changed and slowly sheets with color became the norm. Sheets can be either one color or multi colored depending on the persons taste. There are several different ways to measure a sheets comfort level, but the easiest is by looking at the thread count per square inch.
But that is not always the case, it is possible to have a relatively lower thread count and have a soft bed sheet if the weave has been done well. But overall the comfort and quality of the bed sheet can be measured by using the thread count method. Another factor for quality and comfort is the quality of thread or material used.
There are many different types of textiles used in making bed sheets. Never the less some types are used more often and those typically are, cotton, linen, polyester, and cotton-polyester blends. There are other textiles used also that are generally more expensive such as silk, rayon, and bamboo fiber. Hospitals use a type of disposable sheet that is made out of a textile called nonwoven polypropylene fabric.
There are basically two types of bed sheets in the market, fitted and flat. Fitted bed sheets have either the corners or at times on two or four sides fitted with elastic so that it can be attached to the bed, there fore it is a bottom bed sheet. Flat bed sheets on the other hand are just a rectangular piece of cloth that is draped over the bed and is treated as a top bed sheet.
