How To Choose A Dining Table Set

Convertible Sofa Beds – Three Different Styles

When I first think of convertible sofa beds, I think hide-a-beds, really heavy, and those brown patterned sofa beds from the 1980′s – not really appealing but still out there in student apartments. A sofa bed serves a great purpose, a couch by day and an extra bed at night for guests when you do not have extra room. So you want comfort and function, not usually easy to accomplish. But the industry is always trying, so there are several options on the market of different types of convertible sofa beds.

Since I grew up during the 1970′s and 1980′s, the first type I think of is like the one I mentioned above: a pull out sofa bed. It looks like a normal couch, but then you remove the cushions and there is a bed that can be pulled out from the bottom of the sofa. The mattress on these is not really as thick as a regular mattress, they usually range from 4″ to 6″, and they vary in comfort. They are usually more comfortable if they are newer, and much more expensive ones tend to have better quality mattresses. I have slept on this type of convertible sofa bed with various results. Some I could hardly move in the morning, and other I woke up feeling like a spring chicken. One really good thing about this style is that if you use it regularly, you can leave it made up with sheets and blankets. This style most commonly comes in either a full or queen size bed, though you can also get a love seat that has a twin bed inside. You can also get these as part of a sectional.

When we owned a used furniture store, I came across another style of convertible sofa bed that I had blissfully forgotten about, the click clack style. I am fairly sure that the name comes from the sound that they make when they are converted from sofa to bed: click-clack-click-clack … In this style there is a special kind of hinging mechanism that allows the back of the sofa to lie flat. The earlier style of these have been around for about 60 years, but there are modern versions that are quite innovative. I have seen some, after they are converted into a bed, will have one side (not the back) that hinges up to a 45 degree angle to make much more of a chaise lounge style, or that props a person up to more easily watch TV or read. One advantage to these over the pull out bed is that they take up less room to convert from sofa to bed. One challenge for manufacturers is to make the bed feel flat, no bump in the middle where the bottom and back of the sofa meet.

Another style of convertible sofa beds that became popular in the 1990′s is the futon, which I believe originated in Japan. They convert the same way as a click clack bed, but typically have an all wood, or wood and metal frame. A “mattress” sits on the frame and bends in the middle when it is set up as a sofa. When you lay the frame flat, you have a bed with a regular, one piece mattress. Futons sometimes get a bad rap for not being comfortable, but just if you get the $100 special from a discount store. Those just don’t last long, they have wimpy frames and just a 4″ mattress. A actually fine quality futon will have about an 8″ mattress, frequently with coils like a real mattress. These are quite comfortable for sleeping.

The Many Reasons For Bedside Tables

When was the last time you ever actually gave any thought to the use of your bedside tables? Have you ever actually given it much thought at all? Chances are you have not, and that seems normal. These are fairly tame pieces of furniture for sure.

But it is a pretty sure bet to assume that there is at least on in your room right at this moment. What are you doing with it? Can you be doing more? It seems that with some ingenuity and imagination, a good normal bedside table could be an exciting piece of furniture. At the extremely least it can do much more than collect dust.

Probably the biggest prop, and most generally used item, on your table is an alarm clock. Now consider this utilitarian device for a moment. Do you hate yours? That is a good beginning.

The Victorians often displayed their wealth with very intricately designed furniture. The extremely detailed carvings marked the opulence of the era. Number One On Your College Wish List – The Dorm Bunk Bed

For most young people, the college dorm is essentially their first place that is all to themselves, well, with the usual exception of a roommate or two. I’ve come up with a list of 7 items that will make your stay far much more comfortable.

1) The dorm bunk bed, or loft bunk bed. Most dorm rooms are already furnished with very basic furniture, a desk and a chair. Changing your room into much more comfortable living quarters will also improve your quality of study. A dorm bunk bed will raise your bed to allow usable and valuable floor space to be utilized to the fullest. And don’t worry about what to do with the dorm issued military style bed, most colleges have places in the dorm where these items can be stored.

2) Computer or study desk. With the bed raised up and out of the way, a desk will fit neatly underneath your new bed. Usually the standard desks that are in most rooms are fine. Desks really haven’t advanced in the last two decades, a desk is basically still a desk.

3) A desk/bed lamp. Now that the desk is underneath the bed, you’re going to need much more light, and a desk gentle is essential. A clamp on light for the bed is also a must if you plan on reading in bed a lot.

4) Area rug. If there was only one transformation that you could make to turn a dull, dull dorm room into a cozy, more comfortable place to live, it would be an nice 10′x12′ area rug. For the money, this is the single biggest improvement you can make to your room. Put a rug in and everybody will want to sit on it. Plus, it’s so far better than putting your empty feet on a chilly floor every morning.

5) Some sort of seat or chair. What’s the best? Actually, a bean bag chair, not only are they extremely comfortable, but they are easy to move, and come in every imaginable color. Pick a loud color that compliments your rug and make your dorm room “pop”.

6) Earplugs/Headphones. Yes, get yourself a handful of those foam plugs that fit neatly into your ears. There are going to be times when you wish you had them. Another alternative is an mp3 personal music player with ear buds. This helps a lot to drown out that occasionally annoying “dorm” noise.
