You Can Teach An Older Dog New Tricks!

Having a dog in your life can be wonderful, and the unconditional love they give is comparable to none. But what if your dog is beginning to exhibit aggressive behaviour, similar to a child who is suddenly out of control. Early abuse may be the reason for the change in what seemed a happy go lucky character, or what is more common the lack of training in the early days of the dogs life. It will not make you feel any better to know that the neighbours in your street are aware of his aggression and you wonder how long it will be till they do something about it.

You had always wanted to own a dog and the day had finally arrived to visit Max named by his owner who required a new home for him. Walking up to the gate you were met with a barking dog that seemed to totally ignore any commands from his current owner. You discounted this as you had been told a guard dog would be good as you lived alone,.Had you brought a dog obedience trainer with you they would have pointed out that this was not good behaviour. Once inside the house you sat on the floor in order for Max to feel comfortable with you, this was another thing that had been suggested and it seemed to work well. You took a shine to this dog so bundled him into your car and took him home where the two of you could get to know each other in his new environment.

You awoke early to a beautiful day, the sun was shining and the world seemed like a perfect place. What a great day for a walk with your new dog you could show him the sights and introduce him to the people in your street. Things were going well as you spotted Mrs Jones up ahead in the distance, walking in your direction. What happened next was never expected as Max began to pull on the lead with all his might. Being thrown off balance you found yourself being dragged up the road at quite some speed. Max then leapt upon Mrs Jones barking and growling at her and before you could speak he had proceeded to bite her on the arm. Luckily she was wearing heavy clothing, which protected her from serious harm and injury but the shock that was felt when you realized that Max had a serious behavioural problem would stay with you for some time. This was a dear lady that Max had violated who agreed he deserved a second chance and some training was required.

The problem here is that poor Max may have been a victim of abuse, which is not that uncommon or had absolutely no training in his first year of life. You resigned yourself to help Max as he had won your heart so after a visit to the local vet to check there was nothing physically wrong with him you enrolled him in a dog obedience class as interaction with other dogs and people will help Max understand better what behaviour is expected of him. When dogs attack like this it is usually based on fear and the premise “I am going to attack you before you can hurt me”

Basic training in a controlled environment could save Max’s life and your reputation and give you the dog you were hoping to have. Yelling, screaming and hitting are never acceptable solutions to the problem This will only make him worse. Patiently teach him to come to you and walk him in the park or away from people and dogs till he learns better ways. The effort you put in will pay dividends and Max will hopefully become a happy, well-adjusted dog. Puppy Training Tips For House Training

Puppies are so cute; everybody loves them. They are cuddly, fun, playful and curious and we tend to enjoy every part of owning a new puppy until they do their duty in an inappropriate spot and then we have to deal with the biggest problem and difficulty of owning a new puppy, house training.

The most crucial thing to remind yourself of and to take into consideration is that your puppy is still very young. He does not yet have the comprehension level to control his potty habits or to know what you are asking him to do when you tell him to go potty. You will need to have patience and work with him closely for a few weeks before he has the ability to alert you when it is time to go out and to manage his bladder and other functions.

At 12 weeks of age a puppy will have to go out to potty as often as every 15-20 minutes and even more if he is actively frolicking. A resting puppy will not have to go out quite as frequently so during the night you can give him more time usually if he is sleeping. Do not wake a sleeping puppy just make sure to take him outside as soon as he wakes up.

The crucial thing to remember when you are potty training your puppy is to be consistent. Make sure and have a leash and take him to the same designated spot every outing. Use consistent commands such as “potty now” and repeat the commands as necessary. Consistency is what it crucial when it comes to house training.

If you make the potty training a positive experience for your puppy your potty training will be finished sooner. That means that you will need to be patient and loving even when there is a mishap. Just take him outside and praise him when he does it right and don’t give it any attention when he does it wrong. Your puppy wants to make you happy so it is important that you do not do anything that will confuse him.

It is unlikely that you will be able to be with your puppy all the time so when you need to be away from your puppy you should use a crate. Puppies and dogs are natural den animals and they like to have a small place of their own. Also, puppies will rarely dirty their own place so a crate will help to teach your puppy how to control himself.

A positive atmosphere and consistency will be the most crucial aspects of your puppy house training. Make sure that you are consistently taking your puppy outside, that you consistently take him to the same spot and that you consistently give him praise and treats for a job well done. If you make the whole house training experience a positive one for your puppy you will have success more quickly and it will be more effective.

In a few short weeks your house training will be over and you will no longer have to be concerned about accidents in the house. House training is the most important aspect of having a new puppy but it can be much simpler than you expect if you are consistent and positive.

Why Training Golden Retrievers is Essential

Golden Retriever training should be mandatory for your new family pet. While Golden’s are naturally loving and friendly, an untrained Golden can be a handful. Remember that a full grown Golden Retriever can be 70 plus pounds and can easily knock a person to the floor.

Dog Biting Problems-A Serious Issue

Dog biting is probably the most serious of all dog behavioral problems. Peeing on the carpet, going on the couch or any other behavioral problem will not raise such dire results as biting, as many communities demand to put down a dog if it bites someone seriously. If your dog exhibits biting tendency then it might cost his life, which makes it vital to train your dog to not bite anyone ever.

On the other hand, biting problems are common and quite normal in case of puppies. This problem arises mostly during their teething period when they have an uncontrollable urge to chew and bite on anything and everything. Though a puppy bite might break your skin it will not pose any other serious problems. However, this is the right time and age to train your puppy not to bite ever again

Why Does My Dog Always Jump On People?

Do you have to put your dog away when visitors come to your house in the fear of your dog jumping on someone? Do you get greeted at the door with sharp paws and a slobbery wet kiss everyday after a long day at work? No matter how ofter you scold or punish your dog, does he keep jumping up on you and others when you walk though the door? A dog jumping up on you and your visitors is a very common problem and one that can be eliminated rather quickly if you know what to do.

When your dog was a puppy, he was much smaller and when he came running to you he would jump on your ankle or maybe your knee, no big deal right? And in response to your little bundle of joy, you would reach down and pet him, maybe even pick him up.

You have just taught your puppy a very important lesson, “when I jump up on my owners leg he/she gives me love!” Fast foreword a few months and now that once small little puppy is 3, 4, maybe 5 times the size he once was. He doesn’t understand the difference, he just wants the love that he knows how to get by jumping on you.

Before we move on to how to stop dogs jumping on you, let me make it clear that there are two main reasons why a dog may jump on you.

Most often dogs jump out of extreme excitement. Such as, seeing you after a long absents (coming home from work) or during high energy playtime.

The second and much more serious reason why some dogs jump on people is to show dominance. Dominance issues are a more complicated problem of communication and attitude. Dominance, If let unchecked for too long could really be difficult to over come. If you feel that you may be dealing with a dog that is jumping on people to display dominance, I suggest that you brush up on your alpha dog skills.

How you react to your dog jumping on you and others will determine whether or not he repeats this behavior. You will have to make a commitment to continuing effort and consistency in dealing with this problem. To stop dog jumping you have to make it clear to your dog that it is never acceptable to jump on you or anyone.

What this means is you are going to fallow though with the same training all the time every day until he masters this new behavior. You can’t expect your dog to know the difference between nice cloths and play cloths, muddy paws and clean paws or play time and greeting time. If you let him jump in one situation he will think it’s ok to jump when ever he feels like it.

The most effective way to change any dog behavior happens to also be the easiest way to change unwanted dog behavior, and that is to “ignore the bad and reward the good”. Or what is also know as positive reinforcement training. I know that is the last thing you are thinking of when your dog just put a new run in your patty hose or knocked a small child down but with a little pre-planning positive reinforcement works really well.

When your dog goes to jump on you, turn your back on him right away. Dogs understand body language much more than the spoken word. So, what you need to do here is use your posture to get your message though loud and clear. As soon as he gets his paws are back on the ground, reward him with praise. If he gets excited again and goes to jump, turn your back, head and eyes away from him (the cold shoulder). You can repeat this cycle several times in a matter of seconds. Don’t concern yourself with confusing your dog because they can only comprehend your reaction to their given behavior at that moment. Continue this training technique for the next several days and soon your dog will stop jumping on you.

Like people, dogs have personalities and every dog has a different personality. Training a dog can be a challenging and frustrating experience. It doesn’t have to be. Tips on Purchasing A Dog Cage

It can be very confusing when looking to buy a dog cage for your best friend. The reason for this is that there are so many types available. These vary from the heavy duty metal dog cages to the smaller, cut, decorative ones that tend to appear more like a piece of furniture.

The folding wire cages are one of the most popular and usually cheapest models around. They are very useful for crate training your dog and for travelling. They are open on all sides which can be a disadvantage as it does not provide a quiet area for your pet to retreat to. This can be remedied though by simply placing a blanket over the cage.

A popular chice nowadays is the soft dog cage. They are popular because they look cute and thay are nice and warm and cozy for your dog. Although they are quite durable, you may run into problems if your dog likes to chew things or is going to grow a lot bigger. They are ideal for the smaller breeds of dogs.

The next type is the wicker dog cage, which is one of my favorites. It will often blend in with the furniture at home and so is ideal if you plan on keeping the cage indoors. As with the soft type of cage, these types are best suited to small dogs.

For transporting dogs in vehicles, one of the most popular types used is the plastic dog cage. They have vents at the sides and top and a door at the front. They cost a bit more than the other types, so if you are going to invest your money it is worthwhile getting one that is airline carrier approved. I find this type of cage better fro travelling in cars than the wire type.

When finally going out and buying your new dog cage you also need to consider the size of your dog, his tendencies and habits. If you have a large dog or one that is a chewer, especially if he is going to spend a lot of time in the cage, I would recommend a plastic one.

No matter which cage you decide to purchase, this is going to be your dogs new home. As such it should be a cage that provides him with security and a quiet place that he can rest.
