How To Deter Burglars With Outdoor Lighting

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Anybody who knows anything about deterring burglars and especially home security will inform you that lighting is a vital feature of protecting yourself and your property. Interior lighting is important, but outdoor lighting is essential. Despite that, there are still a great deal of people who do not pay enough attention to this vital feature of home security. They appear to believe that they can rely solely on the interior burglar alarm.

However, the best method of deterring burglars is stopping them getting into your property in the first place. It is a well-known fact that many people do not act in response to a neighbour’s security alarm ringing because there are so many false alarms. The difference with outdoor lighting is, that as the would be burglar enters your property, a floodlight will switch on, automatically framing the intruder in a powerful beam, which is the last thing that any burglar would like, especially if there is a CCTV camera there as well, even if it a false one.

The stipulation is that the lights must be out of reach, in case the burglar sets your property up during the day time for a robbery later on that night. Therefore, if you notice that one or more of your outdoor lights is not operational, you should have it checked out straight away. Not tomorrow, right now, before it gets dark.

The most widespread point of entry into a house, even for burglars, is the doors. Therefore, you must place lighting at all external doors. If you have glass panels on the doors, the sensor could be outside and the light could be inside, shining out. That way it is more tamper-free.

If your house appears too secure, a burglar may come to a decision that your garage is an easier target. The means you can get around this is by linking a light to the opening of your garage door, so that when the garage door is opened the burglar will be standing in a pool of light.

The outside of your house should be protected by at least one outdoor light per exterior wall and these lights should be triggered by sensors: either a movement sensor or a passive infra red (PIR) sensor. The good ones will also be governed by a daylight sensor so that they only activate at night time.

In order to be doubly certain that you notice the outside lighting coming on, you could make the security light connected to your main burglar alarm system. If you are in the house at the time, a fairly quiet internal alarm should ring, but if you are out, then the lights should trigger the main external siren.

Following this advice will help keep your house and your family safe, but it is important to stay vigilant. You must keep your alarm system in tip-top condition. Light bulbs have to be renewed immediately and any problems with the system that you come across, must be attended to immediately too.

Lastly, in order to be serious about deterring burglars with outdoor lighting, you will need to have your system checked and brought up-to-date every five years or so.

Outside Solar-Powered Lights

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Mankind needs light. We humans are dependent on light unlike some other species. Our whole world existed only in the day light for millions of years. We got up with the sunlight and went to sleep when the sun went down. Afterward, we learned to produce our own light, but we were not totally successful at it until we commenced using electricity to make light.

This has worked well for almost a hundred years, but now we realize that the main fuel used to produce our electricity, namely oil, is becoming too difficult to get hold of and more and more wars are being fought to ensure the West’s supply of oil.

Not only that, but greater and greater risks are being taken by oil bosses, which has lead to more and more catastrophes like that of the deep sea rig off Louisiana in the USA.

Consequently, the time has come, some even say that it is long overdue, that we depend on a different source of power and less on oil. The easiest and least risky way to produce electricity at the moment seems to be solar power. The technology has been with us for decades, but it was not practical for households to use it because it was too expensive, but that is no longer the case.

The ability to use solar power to produce electricity for our lighting and indeed all our requirements is there, already at hand. The only problem is that there are many oil baron billionaires who do not see this advancement as being in their interest. And they are right, in a way, it is not in their selfish interest to decrease our dependence on oil, but it is in the planet’s and its population’s interest. That is mankind’s predicament at this moment.

Solar panels can be utilized to produce electricity for immediate use either inside or outside the home and the surplus generated can either be stored in batteries or fed back into the electric grid for which you will be remunerated (and remunerated at a very high rate, in some countries).

If you are not ready to come off the grid just quite yet, you could still use solar panels to power some of your external lights. In fact, there is a broad choice of outdoor lighting that provides its own power.

These external lights use mini solar panels, which the manufacturer has built in to the casing of the light to create power from the sunlight during daylight hours and then stores it in internal batteries to be used later.

These lamps also have a capacity to run the light on battery power from dusk until dawn. The solar unit determines whether to charge the batteries or supply light by the intensity of the ambient light. This solar power set up is ideal for external security lighting and accent lighting in the garden. They are perfect for lighting up the fish pond or the drive too.

Solar powered external lighting has come a long way and it is well worth you finding out more, if you would like to reduce your dependency on electricity produced by oil from the grid.

Learn To Find The Right Security Camera

Friday, June 11th, 2010

It is not complicated to buy a home security camera. But it still needs a little planning. And like with thievery protection and terrorist protection, you also need to know your requirements. So read on and find out, which (and how many) cameras you need, before you log on to the internet or spend your money at the local security specialist.

The simplest camera model is set up outside your front door. When the doorbell rings, you can see who is outside your home. With this type of camera you can always feel safe, if you are afraid to let a stranger into your house.

If you have a little more money to spend, you can buy a more advanced model with video and two-way audio system. This way it is possible to ask the person to show some kind of identification to the camera, before you are letting them in.

So when you have cleared your demands according to if you need two-way audio, you have to decide if you like the camera connected to some kind of recording device. Or if the ability just to see people is enough for you.

So even though you only have one entrance, there are needs to be addressed. If you just need a simple camera, you can buy a kit with all the features that covers the need you have.

Next question you have to ask yourself is, if it is enough with just one camera at the entrance. Or if you have to cover more entrances (or possible entrances) as well. Maybe you would also like a camera in your garage or in the driveway (or wherever you normally park your car).

Some of cameras offer motion detection on/off switches also connected to lighting systems so as soon as you drive up, the camera and lights all turn on simultaneously.

You can be comforted by the thought that if anybody is lurking nearby to grab you or your car as you exit the vehicle, the automatic lighting system and visible camera will most likely scare them off the minute it turns on.

The final factor you have to plan before you buy the camera is the power source. You have to have the right power source near the camera, monitor and switch to make the security camera system operates properly.

It is possible to buy battery-operated systems, but then you have to keep the batteries, which can be very time consuming. So it is better to locate the nearest power source and see, if it is usable compared to where you want to place the cameras and other equipment.

Martin Elmer is writing about how to secure your home in alarm. Here you can also read about alarm systems and security cameras in mobil alarm.

OC Pepper Spray – What It Is and How It Works

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Oleoresin Capsicum Pepper Spray is the most widely used less-than-lethal, self-preservation product in use today. It is more generally referred to as “OC Pepper Spray.” In the past few years its popularity has grown. It has now become the primary personal defense device preferred by more average law-keeping individuals than any other defensive weapon.

Just what is OC spray and how does it work? Pepper spray is made from the naturally occurring, nontoxic chemical called Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) found in hot pepper plants. This is where the name “OC Pepper Spray” comes from. OC is the active ingredient in the hot peppers. The effectiveness or hotness of pepper spray is measured in Scoville Heat Units (SHU). SHU is a scale that was developed in 1912 by the American chemist, Wilbur Scoville, used to measure the hotness or piquancy of various peppers. The number of SHU indicates the amount of capsaicin present. For example, a standard bell pepper is rated at 0 SHU, Jalapeno’s are at 5000 and a Habanero is 250,000-300,000 SHU. For a pepper spray to have an effect on people it should be rated at 2 million SHU, however, some police grade pepper sprays are rated as high as 5 million SHU.

OC spray is an inflammatory agent, that when sprayed in the face of an assailant, will force the eyes to close immediately, it also causes temporary blindness, difficulty in breathing, a runny nose and an irrepressible cough that will send him to his knees. OC is also very effective on perpetrators who are under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or experiencing any kind of psychotic episode. The duration of the OC effects depend on the strength of the spray, but the average full effect lasts around thirty to forty-five minutes, with diminished effects lasting for hours. The assailant will usually make a full recovery once the effects completely wear off and, other than embarrassment, will not suffer any lasting adverse aftereffects.

OC is an oily substance. It cannot be washed away with water despite how much is used. The best way to reduce the consequences of pepper spray in the eyes is to briskly blink it way with tears. This will aid in cleansing the irritant from the eyes. Additionally, to prevent the burning sensation from spreading to other parts of the body it is best to avoid touching the affected spots. Massaging ointments onto the affected areas will only serve to trap the capsaicin in the skin resulting in a heightened burning sensation and possibly even cause blistering to occur.

Pepper spray normally comes in canisters, which are often miniature enough in size to be carried or hidden away inside a pocket or purse. Pepper spray can also be bought disguised as ordinary items such as rings, lipstick, or some other everyday object such as a pager or pen. Additionally, pepper spray will expire after about 3-4 years due to the aerosol propellant escaping from the container. If used after the expiration date, it might not spray as expected. The expiration date of some models can be found on the label.

Overall OC defense sprays are considered by civilians to be the best non-lethal self-defense devices available. Their use is not considered deadly force, the sprays are legal in most states and usually no special permit to own or dispense the chemical is required. However, there are some states that do restrict the purchase and use of pepper spray. In New York, for example, the pepper spray must be purchased from with-in the state, from a licensed pharmacist or firearms dealer. Massachusetts also requires the spray to be purchased from a licensed firearms dealer. In Michigan, “OC” pepper spray cannot be stronger than 2%, and in Wisconsin, the spray cannot exceed 10%. In California and Florida pepper spray is legal up to a 2oz. unit. When traveling, OC cannot be taken on board any airplane for obvious security reasons. Before purchasing pepper spray it would be wise to check with the police department for local and state laws on its’ use or restrictions.

When Considering Information About Personal Alarms

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Nowadays, people are more interconnected than ever before. That fact might seem threatening to some people, but the fact that we have access to certain tools that can help us stay connected to others in cases of dire need should be a comfort. What to know about personal alarms, which is one set of tools now available to help those with illness issues, most especially, can be important for many people to know.

Many such alarms come in a number of sizes and shapes as well as capabilities. With the exception of certain medically-related devices, most share similar characteristics, especially in the level of noise they can emit. Some can exceed 130 decibels, in fact, and will set off at the tap of a simple button. These noises are useful in that they usually will attract other people to the sound. They also are very small and can be carried on key chains, as a matter of fact.

A wide range of models come with the ability to emit extremely loud and very piercing sounds when they are triggered. Some of them are capable of producing over 130 dB of noise upon command, in fact. This can help to bring people to the area where the sound is issuing forth, if only out of curiosity. Studies show that the more people are around, the safer other people tend to feel and to be.

For the most part, almost all personal-type alarm devices not related to self-defense are seen on TV and are also known as medical alert or medical alarms. They usually are a small part of a larger monitoring and alarm system which costs a few extra dollars a month. Elderly and senior people find these types of alarms to be very attractive, given their general age and probable physical issues as they grow older.

These devices are usually worn on the wrist or as a pendant. A push of a button will connect the device to a telephone in the home that’s been equipped to receive the signal and then dial a medical response center. The device enables two-way conversation between the person suffering an issue and the center, which can notify friends, family members or even emergency medical services whenever needed.

There are people uncomfortable with the need to constantly wear a device on a wrist, in which case certain of these alarms can be put on a necklace or neck chain and used as a pendant. Almost all such devices can be swapped out between the wrist and a necklace, as well. It rarely takes more than just a minute or so to carry this off.

Most alarms are more of a “personal defender” type of mechanism, though, and that’s where the majority of them really shine. Some of these devices are also made and marketed as “travel alarms” and can be taken along by the traveler to act as hotel room motion sensor devices or door intrusion alarms that emit piercingly loud wails should an intruder try to invade the hotel room.

Personal alarms are extremely handy and are recommended for women, children and those who are entering or leaving darkened areas such as parking lots or garages. Many are employed as self-defense devices while others are intended for use as medical alarm devices. The self-defense device category features many types that cost well under twenty dollars, as well.

A Wonderful Gift to Yourself and Loved Ones is Crime Prevention

Monday, February 1st, 2010

The winter holiday season is a very busy time of year for everyone, especially for criminals. With the holiday season upon us, most people are preoccupied with the details of holiday planning and shopping. Many shoppers are out and about running errands, carrying more money and packages than during other times of the year. Unfortunately criminals view the holiday season as a time of opportunity. This is not a time to forget that criminals will also be out and about looking for easy targets to make a big score. Nothing can ruin your Christmas spirit faster than becoming the victim of a crime.

According to the FBI, crime incidents become more frequent during this particular time of the year. Burglaries, muggings, car thefts, robberies, pick pocketing, credit card scams and crimes at ATMs all increase during the month of December. Often the safety precautions we may normally take are forgotten as the anticipation and excitement of the Yuletide season causes us to let our guard down. Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, remember to stay alert and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Criminals will often target those who are distracted and aren’t paying attention.

After that Thanksgiving feast when you head out to the malls to start that holiday shopping, be sure to keep the following tips in mind. Don’t forget these tips are relevant at other times of the year too.

SAFETY IN THE PARKING LOT

Staying safe while shopping for the holiday can be a bit trying at times. This is because there are fewer daylight hours in the daytime. Shoppers often arrive at that mall while it is yet day only to find it has gotten dark outside when they leave. Often they don’t think about that and aren’t very picky about where they park.

Because parking lots fill up quickly this time of year, it might be harder to find a good parking spot. Look for one that has plenty of light and lots of pedestrian traffic around. Avoid parking in remote areas if at all possible and don’t forget to lock your vehicle when you leave. Become familiar with the area where you parked. Take a mental note of the row and number so you can easily find your car when you return.

Take a companion along when you shop. This will lessen your chances of being targeted by an attacker or mugger. If you have no choice but to shop alone, then try to walk with other shoppers through the parking lot.

SHOPPING MALL SAFETY

Once inside the mall stay away from dark hallways and backroom areas, especially near closing time. Avoid using bathrooms that are hidden in a back passageway. Use facilities located near the mall’s food court or other well-trafficked areas instead.

Be careful and on guard when walking in crowds. Look out for people you do not know who deliberately bumps, jostles or gets too close as these may be diversions for pickpockets who try to steal your wallet. While you are at it, you might want to keep a close eye on your shipping bags and other personal property too. Keep your purse close to your body and never leave it unwatched in the shopping cart. It’s not a good idea to keep your wallet, credit cards, or cash in your back pocket or a backpack. Pickpockets can swiftly with easy get at these items without being caught. As an alternative, carry them in your front pockets.

Don’t carry large amounts of cash with you. Try to make your purchases using a personal check, credit card, or ATM card if you can. At the times when you do pay using cash, pull out only what you need. Keep the rest of your cash hidden away so bystanders can see how much you are carrying. Regardless of the time of year, it is never a good idea to carry large amounts of cash with you. Try to save your most costly purchases for last, so you can head straight home afterward.

When you are ready to go back to your car, don’t be overloaded with packages. Combine as many of them as you can into fewer packages or make several trips to your car. Carrying too many packages will hinder your view and you won’t be able to move quickly to avoid being attacked.

It’s best to have your car keys ready and in hand when you reach your vehicle to prevent having to search for them. You may also want to check if you are being followed to your car too. When you approach your car wait until you get closer to use your remote to unlock it. Unlocking your car from a distance could alert a would-be attacker which vehicle is yours. He could then race ahead and be waiting for you arrive. Before you get into your car scan the back seat and other areas where an attacker might hide to make sure it is safe to do so.

Don’t leave your valuables and packages inside your vehicle in plain sight. It is best to put them into your trunk where they are hidden from view. Failure to do so could be cause for someone to break into your car and take your belongings.

Once inside of your vehicle, you should lock your doors right away and then drive off. Wait until later to check off your list or scribble purchases into your checkbook ledger. Don’t delay your departure if it can be helped. Doing so gives an attacker the time he needs to walk up to your car and force his way inside, especially if you didn’t lock your doors.

An additional precaution you may to consider is to carry a personal alarm. A personal alarm is great for getting the attention of witnesses if you ever need it. They are easily carried on your wrist or key chain and will emit a loud annoying noise when activated. An attacker will not like that kind of attention. He will stop his assault and go away.

Following the safety advice outlined above will help your holiday to be a merry one.

Self Defense Devices For Women

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Self-defense is a very important topic for all people. Crime is something that is always going to be around and criminals are becoming more and more wily and coming up with new ways to attack people and take their things. For women, the chance of being sexually attacked and raped is another serious problem and something that occurs all over the world daily. Whilst you may sit back and think that something like that would never happen to you, it is something that requires your serious consideration and thoughts.

Whilst men are at risk of attack, women are more so. An attack is most likely to occur at night when it is dark and so steps need to be taken to ensure that you have done all that you can to avoid anyplace where you might be attacked. Never go anywhere alone at night and always make sure that you stay in well-lit areas. Avoid things like side streets and any vegetated areas where you might be in great danger of attack. Also, if you are going on a night out then try to limit your drinking and not get too drunk.

There are lots of different self-defense options that you might want to consider. First of all, you should try to find time to learn some martial arts techniques that will enable you to stay safe against any potential attacker. These will focus on an attackers weak spots like their groin and eyes.

Whether or not you are able to learn some martial arts techniques, you should try to get yourself certain devices that will help you to stave off any would be attacker. One such option is getting yourself a stun gun. This will deliver a high voltage charge into the chest of any attacker and render them unconscious for some time. When the attacker is down you will be able to escape and go to inform the authorities.

Much like a stun gun, you can also consider using a taser. This can be used from up to 20 feet away and will cause temporary paralysis to the attacker, again enabling you to escape.

Another option is to get a mace or pepper spray. This can be stored in your handbag, or for even easier access can be disguised as a ring or a necklace that you are wearing. This will allow you to take your attacker unawares when they may well have snatched your bag away from you when they first strike. Being sprayed by one of these devices is extremely painful and can cause the eyes to shut for about half an hour.

Last of all, you might even consider carrying a knife as a self-defense product. You can get ones that are specifically designed as self-defense, although these sorts of options should be at the bottom of your shopping list due to the height of knife crime.

It is therefore a great idea to make sure that you carry with you a self-defense device as well as learning some basic martial arts techniques to ward off any would be attacker.

Protecting Yourself With Stun Guns

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

I am getting along into my older years and my family believes it is time I had some home protection. It started because a neighbor (who lives a few doors down) had his home broken into. He walked in as the thieves were leaving. He got a few bumps and bruises but, he is doing well. My children suggested some stun guns.

I guess we just never took the time to think how unsafe our lives are. We seem to take for granted that life is so precious and there are people who are willing to take that life, no matter the costs. People are rude and obnoxious. They take with no feeling for the other person’s suffering. This is the world we have today.

My mother always taught me to help people. That is something she did until the day she died. She always was ready with a helping hand and an open heart. She felt it was her privilege to help others. She told me never to fail to give help to others. This shows love and helps to spread hope.

Also, the color ranges are wide. I remember seeing a stun gun several years ago. It was nothing marvelous but, it did get my attention. But, it seemed too big and bulky. But, these that I saw at the pawn shop were very colorful. You can get one to match your purse. I think that is funny, getting one to match an article you already have. I saw one in my favorite color, and that is purple. I may get that one.

Stun guns make sense to me. Now, if you want to have a pistol, I do not blame you. But, for me, I just do not think I could pull the trigger. I guess I am afraid of the mess I will have to clean. What ever the reason, I have no problems using the likes of a stun gun.

I want a good measure of self-defense. Even though the prices seemed reasonable enough, why spend money if it is not going to work for me at all? This amount of power seems to be able to do the job. Even if the perpetrator is a large person, this should stop them from harming me. Besides, I do not want to kill them. I just want to stop them.

For women who need fashion coordinates, there are stun guns for you, too. I have seen red, green, blue, pink (yes ladies, pink), and yellow. There are camouflaged ones, too. Such a variety that it should be easy for you to find something you like. They will fit in your purse, pocket, hand or even in your boots.

This would make a fantastic gift for anyone you care for. You think not! Why? It gives a sense of security and may save their lives. How could anyone not think this would make a spectacular gift? Is it not better to have a stun gun and not need it, than to not have one, and then need it?

You can learn more about stun guns and other personal protection products like I did at A1 Self Defense Products www.a1selfdefenseproducts.com.

Which Personal Protection Devices Should You Choose?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Anyone can become a victim of crime. No one can predict when or where it will happen. As such it is wise to stay alert and be ready to take preventative action at all times. Most people don’t think they’ll ever become a victim of a crime. So they don’t give it much thought. This is the type of person an attacker hopes to find to be his next victim.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation reports that crimes occur around the clock in the United States. Violent crimes such as murder, rape, assault, etc. are happening all the time somewhere in the U.S. Regrettably there are no guarantees you won’t be the next victim of a vicious attack. If it ever happens to you, it will mostly likely occur all of a sudden.

Reducing the risk of becoming the next victim is the definitive goal of preventing crime. This is easily achieved by making yourself less of a target. There are quite a few self-defense tactics you can choose to use for your own personal protection. Taking a self-defense class is one method you may want to consider, especially if you are a woman. Self-defense products are another method you may want to use.

Due to the rising crime rate, self-defense products are becoming more and more accepted these days. They are legal just about everywhere in the U.S. and are an affordable means of protection. In addition, police and military use them all around the world to enforce the law and control large gatherings of people.

Self-defense products are non-lethal devices designed to give you enough time to get away from danger. Novices can easily use them with confidence.

There are many options available when it comes to picking a self-defense product. Three of the most popular devices are personal alarms, pepper spray and stun guns. You can choose which one is the best product to use.

A personal alarm is perfect for drawing attention to yourself when you need to. The last thing an assailant wants is to attract attention. They are small, affordable devices that can be easily carried on your wrist or key chain. When activated they emit a very loud and annoying sound designed to get noticed by others. An attacker won’t like this and will leave you alone.

Pepper spray is very effective and has a target range of up to 18 feet. The sprays cause a burning sensation and tearing of the eyes, shortness of breath and coughing. They can temporarily disable an attacker for up to half an hour.

Almost anyone can be disabled by a stun gun. They are powerful devices that affect the nervous system. This is what controls muscular movement. They work very well in increasing your chances of getting away from a perilous circumstance. An attacker will be disabled in only a few seconds after being shocked with the electrical charge from one.

All of the self-defense products mentioned are effective devices and are surprisingly easy to use with little or no training. It is recommended that all three be kept with you and ready for use at all times. Which device you use would depend on the circumstances you find yourself in

Fearing for your safety? Take Personal Security Training Courses

Monday, December 14th, 2009

If you are looking for ways to protect yourself from someone who may want to harm you, there is no better defense than education. Learning basic personal security techniques does not have to involve weeks of rigorous training and involve demanding skills and techniques but it can go a long way in arming you with basic self-defense skills.

You want to be prepared for a potential robbing, mugging or attack – no matter how slim the chances may be. And while most people can sense what sorts of situations and places to avoid, sometimes it is not possible to avoid a threatening situation. In times like these, you want to be prepared!

Potential attackers choose their targets carefully. This does not necessarily mean that you have been targeted for days but rather implies that a potential attacker will assess and determine if you will be their next victim or not quickly. Something as simple as the manner in which you walk to your car can determine whether or not you will be chosen for the assault.

It is a smart idea to sign up for a personal security training course in your area. These classes will prepare you for the worst-case scenario. You will learn the importance of confidence in deterring criminals and you will learn valuable skills to help you avoid and/or escape from life-threatening situations.

Generally, the people who teach these classes have a background in law enforcement or they may have had some prior personal experience with being assaulted. Either way, they are usually extremely motivated to share their knowledge and teach others how to protect themselves. Classes may meet once or twice a week for a short period of time and you will acquire hands-on skills and practice them so that you are prepared for a real-world situation.

A little personal security training can help you lead a safer, more confident life. By educating yourself, you can take some of the fear out of your everyday activities and be secure in the knowledge that you know how to protect yourself. This alone will make you a much more difficult target for an attacker.

Don’t let yourself be a victim! Invest in a personal alarm or some pepper spray and, most importantly, enroll in a personal security training course because you never know when a threatening situation may arise.

If you are concerned about personal security training i hope you enjoyed this article. You can find a whole host of other info dedicated to personal security on my website.
