Garden Sheds Spiff Up Your Backyard

Friday, December 18th, 2009

A trend that I’m seeing this year with respect to backyards is a return to vogue for backyard garden sheds. And it seems that the run of the mill pre-built wooden and metal sheds are not what most customers have in mind. No, the new trend this year is custom garden sheds – storage buildings with style are what people want this season.

This year our customers all want to put their own personal touches on their shed. In years gone by I would get calls about putting together pre-purchased garden shed kits for clients. The calls would all be the same. The clients just wanted four walls and a roof and a door that could be padlocked. The calls I’m receiving this year couldn’t be more different.

The customizations that clients are looking for are not entirely aesthetic. There is a much greater awareness for the environment, so in fact many customers are requesting green and recycled materials for their garden sheds. Others are concerned about customizing the the roof pitch and gutter design to maximize rainwater collection. Other requests are for tricky shed placement so the new building fits in with the existing hard and soft landscaping.

One call I received was for a particularly whimsical style of shed, recently made popular on the reality series ‘Jon and Kate plus 8′. The 3 little crooked houses that they had built struck a chord with many people, and that is the new most popular request – adding some whimsy and imaginative style to backyard sheds is on the top of the list.

Other special requests are for customizations specifically designed towards the gardener. For example, useful customizations include adding hooks and shelves suited to garden tools, and a parking spot for the wheelbarrow or push mower. Some clients even want a potting table with a sink and a water hookup to allow for easier re potting and clean-up. And of course, along with this, extra storage for potting equipment and supplies also needs to be built-in.

Garden sheds; be they wooden or metal, functional or whimsical are all the rage this year. Outdoor living is very popular. Over the past decade we have seen innovations in bar-b-ques and outside patio furniture. We have seen the popularity of backyard decks soar. We have seen the advent of bug zappers and outdoor space heaters. It was only a matter of time before garden sheds took the spot light.

Planning For a New Garden Shed

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

The addition of a garden shed in your back yard provides a world of added convenience. The structure can be fairly simple and low cost. It can be as simple or elaborate as you wish. It provides a place to tuck away garden tools, plant pots, bags of soil, or perhaps unused sporting equipment.

When you are debating about adding a garden shed, you will want to figure out the pros and cons so that you can justify if it is worth the cost for you. The three benefits that come to my mind right away are 1) it is convenient to store your garden tools or bikes and toys in a garden shed, 2) your belongings will be more secure in a shed, and 3) it makes for a neat and tidy looking backyard when you have a place to store things that otherwise might be piled up in corners or leaning against the house.

Protecting your equipment from the elements is another critical purposes served by a shed. Extended exposure to the sun and the rain will increase the wear and tear on your equipment. The best way to save money in your gardening budget is to keep your equipment in good shape. Failure to protect your equipment from the snow and freezing rain will clearly shorten the lifespan of the same.

If you want to buy or build a little garden shed in your backyard, what is the first thing you should do? What I typically do is go shopping. I head first to Home Depot or Reno Depot and take a look at the garden shed kits that are on display. I can get an idea of what size I need, and how much a shed of that style and size should cost. These garden shed kits are very convenient, but typically will cost about 25% or more than buying the materials alone and building it yourself. Another option is just to go to a shed display center and buy one that is pre-built, or order one to be custom built. The only restriction to buying a pre-built shed is whether there is a clear passage to your backyard when it is transported.

Pre-fabricated garden sheds can be constructed from wood, metal, resin or a combination of materials. Garden shed kits tend to be made from wood or some type of metal like aluminum. In the event you are going to build the shed yourself, you will likely choose to have a wooden shed.

Garden sheds are quick and easy to construct, either from a kit or from scratch. Or consider buying a pre-fabricated garden shed. The addition of a shed to your back yard is a fairly inexpensive proposition. You and your family will yield the benefits and convenience of the garden shed for years to come.
